![]() ![]() border is providing reasonable amounts of anti-depressants for the few talented programmers who find themselves unable to get work visas in order to move on to Google, Apple or Microsoft. There are no shadows, for the very light of the sun is warped by that infinite wall into a uniform gray." I sure do hope that the health care system north of the U.S. I'll repeat something that was once said about Oracle that likely fits the bill for what I imagine to be the office of Research in Motion ""When I think of I imagine a big, gray wall on which slaves labor daily to repaint a grayer shade of gray. This latest effort, or lack there of, really does show off how pathetically lacking in direction the current state of the BlackBerry Operating System is. What's RIMs solution? Make a promo video featuring the most popular song. Heck, even Microsoft is making a serious effort at the smartphone market, kicking innovation into high gear - building a spectacular version of Office for WinMo7 and simultaneously working overtime to appeal to a wider audience. Blackberry user support group? Sorry, there actually isn't an App for that.Īnd while RIM is previewing it's snorefest of a mobile operating system, Apple and Google are upping their corporate game to deliver what I hope will be the final blows. All the while this depressed individual is doing their best to pass the time writing emails and playing brick breaker (fun fact: The original version of 'brick breaker' was a 1972 Atari game called 'Breakout', prototyped by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak 3 years before Apple was even around). #BRICK BREAKER GOOGLE BLACKBERRY UPGRADE#Instead, when I think of a Blackberry, the image that that comes to my mind is a mid-40's professional anxious for his/her contract to end so he/she can upgrade to something that's actually pleasurable to use. When one thinks of the Blackberry, you'd be hard pressed to find many that would list innovation as a primary quality. RIM is even less of a brand worth saving than Chrysler (though with any luck if they get in hot water a turn-around won't be attempted with my cash - RIM is Canadian still, right?). This made Apple a brand worth saving, despite many years of experimental products that proved to be failures, not to mention many poor management decisions. From the start this had been the mantra and tradition of Apple's corporate culture. Let me remind you that the one of the unconsidered reasons for Apple's turn-around-miracle was a philosophy of being unique and releasing ground-breaking polished products. Now before you say "Hey Mike, Apple too, fought hard for survival as well and bought NeXT mid 90's, returning Steve Jobs the company that he started and propelled Apple to unexpected greatness". While on this lumbering path to irrelevancy, RIM have made a recent acquisition of a talented, specialized company 'QNX Technologies'. Obviously trying to respond to the cool factor of Apple's iPhone with this 'edgy video', they are in clear denial that they've lost the lust of all customers and won't admit that they have not been cool in a half decade. It appears they've lost touch with their customer base and are struggling to be remotely interesting in the new decade. It looks like the gears over at Research in Motion are grinding to a halt after years of fairly successful, yet uncompetitive and boring products. ![]() #BRICK BREAKER GOOGLE BLACKBERRY ANDROID#Flicking gestures are supported in even the most crappy Windows Mobile phones and even the cheapest Android phones with capacitive touch displays. The press is calling this operating system the first multitouch Blackberry, making claims that it's going to level the playing field with Apple's market-leading iPhone. The only thing that pleases me is that the browser is assuredly WebKit powered, reducing the amount of time that web developers will spend grinding their molars in frustration due to increased standards compliance. Previewed today, RIM is preparing to debut their latest Blackberry OS that will be sure to infest itself on the next generation of disposable cell phone hardware. The announcement was made in the form of this promotional video. The following is my personal reaction to the announcement of BlackBerry Operating System 6.0 released today at WES 2010. ![]()
